Skin care time!

Elizabeth Arden is a brand synonymous with the best in skin care and focusing on what’s right for your skin type. Celebrity make up artist, Joseph Hernandez, is over in Dublin to promote a piece of technology at Elizabeth Arden that will ensure that we are using the right products for our skin type. Joseph began working with the brand exclusively 15 years ago, and within that 7 years has developed a freelance career that has seen him work with the best in the business, not to mention working alongside Catherine Zeta Jones, the brand’s ambassador, to develop a look for their stunning campaigns.   

Joseph is standing firmly behind the brand’s latest invention, the “matchmaker”. “This computer will read skin and tells you exactly where to concentrate your efforts, it will read sun damage, clarity, elasticity and moisture. It takes five minutes!”. Joseph recommends that customers have their skin read so that you your skin type can be confirmed. “If you get your skin sorted out, make up will follow. Skin care is the most important part. It’s good to cover, but better to correct”, Joseph tells me whilst we are perched on high stools at the Elizabeth Arden counter in Arnotts, where customers can see this technology in use until tomorrow, May 6th

Women are terrible for buying products which are most unsuitable for their skin; we are all victims of marketing sometimes that we forget to check the suitability of each product for our skin, the biggest organ in our bodies. Joseph says the biggest misconception women have about their skin is the definition of oily skin. “Oily skin can still be dehydrated and women think by purchasing a rich cream, will be hydrating. Skin care should be simple!”. Joseph is an advocate of a basic ten minute skin regime, including, cleanse and tone, eye care, moisturising both day and night. “Skincare should be tailored for your lifestyle. This is the optimum skin routine and you can alter it to add a serum for example”, Joseph explains.  

So basically, skin care does not take a lot of effort, it’s just getting it right for you, is the biggest issue. If you want to have your skin read, pop along to Arnotts and meet Joseph for advice from the expert himself.

 Joseph will be back in Arnotts on June 8th for three days to launch the latest in the Prevage range which is set to change the definition of revolutionary skin care forever!

Summer Beauty… Bright Colours

Colour blocking is a particularly popular trend in clothes this year but it’s also de rigueur in the land of beauty, so if you’re a fan of bright shades then this is the time to play around!  Many cosmetic houses have taken the trend for show stopping colour to their hearts, bringing out collections filled to the brim with a variety of sweet shop inspired shades encompassing everything from warm reds to fresh citrus hues. Whether you choose to embrace the trend fully or keep things simple with a splash of accent colour there’s something for everyone in these new releases… 

Givenchy Acid Summer Collection

Elegant French fashion house Givenchy have cranked the volume right up when compared to their normal fare as the brand new Acid Summer collection is quite simply a hotbed of bright, eye catching neon shades to die for whether you want a splash of colour for lips or eyes. The amazing 9 colour eye palette houses highly pigmented, vibrant shades to suit all skin and eye tones whilst the lip glosses will give a serious pop of colour to your pout.

Benefit Bella Bamba 3D Blush

For spring/summer 2011, Benefit have just launched a brand new blusher called Bella Bamba, which is a beautiful watermelon colour laced with shimmering gold pigment to give your face a luminous, girlish glow.

The bright pink is perfect for bringing a sweet flush to cheeks and will pick up tones in blue and green eyes really well. It can also be used to give a little lift to sallow skin for an added brightness. Team with soft muted lips and black mascara for a romantic look or hot pink lips and lashings of liquid liner for a Debbie Harry 1970s punk feel. 

NARS Summer 2011 Collection

Never afraid to shy away from colour, NARS latest range promises to be another hit with the fashion pack as it contains the contrasting shades of bright tangerine for lips and high octane blue for eyes showcased in the trio Cap Ferrat. While we’re waiting for those to arrive, why not check out the versatile Soft Touch Pencils, which come in 3 different shades and can be used as an easy to blend eyeliner or cream shadow. 

MAC Wonder Woman

DC Comics and Marvel are enjoying quite the resurgence this year! With films The Green Hornet released this year and Captain America on the way, it seemed only fitting that the uber cool people at MAC cosmetics would jump on the band wagon with the only female character that managed to kick her way into the nations hearts – Wonder Woman. Totally kitsch but totally fun, the packaging is inspired but Wonder Woman’s outfit of red, yellow and blue so get yourself down to MAC this spring and enjoy the bright colours on offer! 


Urban Decay “Fun Palette”

Trendy yet affordable brand Urban Decay released the much coveted Naked palette last year and have followed it up with the rather lovely trio of “Fun”, “Feminine” and “Dangerous” ones this year. Fun is by far the most inspiring as it contains 6 vibrant colours as well as a limited edition eye primer and comes with an eyeliner as well to complete the look.

Nail Colour

Nail varnish is a cheap and cheerful way to keep your self up to date with the fashion pack, especially when it comes to seasonal trends rather than investment colours. The best variety of shades tend to come from high street brands like Barry M, Rimmel and Andrea Fulerton which all come in under €7 meaning you won’t be left with any buyer’s remorse, yay! If you’re looking to invest in a nail varnish then Chanel’s “Riva” form their Cote d’Azur collection is being heralded as the new “it shade” for nails this summertime.

2011 marks the 15th anniversary of fashion’s leading online portal which incredibly, predates Google UK and MSN! The website revolutionized the way the style world has worked since then, and makes it their business to bring up to the minute news coverage from runway shows and the latest trends in beauty as well as fashion. Condé Nast, the publishing house who own Vogue worldwide and GQ also set up Net-a-Porter and Show Studio 11 years ago with the help of the team. 

To celebrate the milestone of 15 years, some of the world’s leading cosmetic houses and designers including Estee Lauder, Dior and Illamasqua have created bespoke anniversary make-up looks. I especially love MAC’s contribution by their senior make-up artist, Pablo Rodriguez and the special birthday card “You’re the Bomb” by designer Henry Holland.  You can check out all the make-up looks by artists like Ruby Hammer and Bobbi Brown on 

Get Lippy for Charity


The Prince’s Trust have teamed up with one of Britain’s finest make-up artists Karen Alder to create a vibrant, lustrous red lipstick for the charity, simply entitled “Trust”. With celebrities already on board such a KT Tunstel, Holly Valance and Kara Tointon to help promote the campaign, you can do your bit by going to the QVC website and purchasing the lippy for just £8 throughout April. Learn more about how the Prince’s Trust helps to change young lives on their website.  First Non-Airbrushed Advertising Campaign

Make Up Forever have just unveiled a new advertising campaign for their High Definition collection; but what makes this truly newsworthy is that the campaign marks the first ever non airbrushed set of pictures to be released by a cosmetics house. With these images, Make Up Forever have cleverly both showcased the quality of their products whilst also re-igniting the debate as to whether there really is a need for so much photo retouching in advertising. The Huffington Post ran a poll amongst their readers, with a staggering 77% believing that this campaign is a step in the right direction saying that they would prefer to see more beauty companies follow in Make Up Forever’s footsteps.    

 Chanel Make-Up Confidential Website Launch

If you’ve ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes in the Chanel make-up studio then you’re in luck because they’ve just launched a sleek new website called Make-up Confidential! Dedicated to bringing up to date Chanel beauty news; the website features an innovative stop motion animation, this seasons products, previous best sellers, clips of the latest runway shows and tips on how to recreate their iconic looks. For make-up geeks (like me…) there’s also a lovely little video highlighting the career of their Creative Director, Peter Philips who has been changing the face of Chanel since 2008.

When it comes to beauty, pastel colours are really popular this spring, but Lilac/Lavender is making the biggest impact by far, which is lucky because it is the type of colour that suits pretty much every skin tone and can be worked to give either a sophistication or edge to your look, huzzah! So far, it’s been seen on the runways of Nicholas K and Philip Lim as well as in a lot of seasonal cosmetics collections, check out some of the best new releases below… 

Bobbi Brown Peony & Python: This is Bobbi Brown’s perfectly formed limited edition collection for Spring 2011. They enlisted the help of American fashion house Tibi to design the snakeskin inspired make-up case to show off the on-trend shades of pink, purple and neutral grey. In the collection there are also subtle lip shades, a soft pinky, peach blush and dove grey gel eyeliner to compliment the overall wistful romanticism. The extreme lengthening mascara gives lashes a boost and creates depth with shades of either black or plum available.


Smashbox In Bloom Palette: It’s quite rare that a make-up house releases a seasonal collection that is both on trend and will work everyday on a long term basis, but Smashbox have done just that with their In Bloom eye palette for Spring. Filled with ten different neutral shades that are a combination of shimmery eye washes, solid pigments and matte tones, the looks you could create are quite literally limitless!

Chantecaille Les Macarons Face Palette: Luxury brand Chantecaille launched their limited edition face palette a few weeks ago, which contains everything a girl could want for flawless spring time make-up! The palette contains a deep purple eyeliner, skin highlighter, cheek stain and lip gloss to give your face a natural, girlish glow.

Esteé Lauder’s Wild Violet: For Spring/Summer the range includes the lovely Violet Diva nail colour and “Untamed Violet” eyeshadow, which will give our eyes a serious pop of colour.

Lancome have released a similar shade for nails called Le Vernis “Ultra Lavande” which is gorgeous!




Jimmy Choo Eau de Parfum: It was only a matter of time before Jimmy Choo founder, Tamara Mellon launched a fragrance as glamourous as her shoe empire! Encased in faux snakeskin, the grown up sophistication of Jimmy Choo Eau de Parfum is brought to life by a warm toffee base note and then laced with top chords of orchid, and patchouli. Beautiful and feminine and finally… a slightly more affordable product from one of the world’s biggest fashion brands yay! 

L’Occitane Plum Blossom Collection: French beauty house L’Occitane en Provence have just introduced their latest Floral collection for Spring which follows on from the previous Cherry and Peach Blossom launches of past years.

The new season range features a variety of wonderfully, indulgent products including an eau de toilette, hydrating body scrub, lip gloss, body lotion and shower gel, all laced with the intoxicating scent of the soft, powdery “Fleurs de Brignoles”; the beautiful Plum Blossom. Prices range from €5 – €40 so won’t make your credit card beg for mercy either!
