Nokia Young Fashion Designer Award 2010 … the next big thing in fashion is about to debut!

Next week will bring the announcement of the Nokia Young Fashion Designer Award 2010. This year the judging panel is full of fashion royalty who will use their year’s of expertise to launch the next young thing into fashionland.

This year’s judging panel include Autograph designer at Marks and Spencer, Marc O’ Neill, Irish designer, Aideen Bodkin, ASOS Senior Designer, Debbie Walker, Creative Director of Avoca, Amanda Pratt and top fashion blogger, Yvan Rodic from Young Fashion Designer Award 2010

Irish Designer Marc O’Neill currently designs for the Autograph collection in leading department store Marks and Spencer. Marc’s trademark is his strong tailoring, which is evident in his Marks and Spencer Spring/Summer Autograph 2010 collection.

Award winning, Irish Designer Aideen Bodkin is also on the judging panel. Aideen is a past student of NCAD and has since established her own range of clothing, which is supplied in high-end fashion boutiques throughout Ireland and the UK.

Debbie Walker is Senior Designer at top shopping website ASOS. She is no stranger to fashion competitions, reaching the final of Sky One’s Project Catwalk in 2006, which led her to work on Liz Hurley’s beachwear collection.

Amanda Pratt is creative director of Avoca. Amanda was voted one of the Top 50 most influential and powerful Irish women in business by the Irish Independent in 2008. Founded over 43 years ago by the Pratt family Avoca is still a family run business which has 11 stores and restaurants nationwide.

Yvan Rodic, aka Facehunter, is a Swiss-born street fashion photographer and blogger who lives in London. Yvan began his blog in 2006 and has since become hugely popular. Facehunter is daily eye candy for fashionistas and has approximately 20,000 visitors per day.

Previous NYFDA judges include top designers John Rocha, Jonathan Saunders, Pauric Sweeney, Eileen Sheilds, Eilis Boyle, Louis Copeland, Tim Ryan and Louise Kennedy, as well as Topshop buying director Caren Downie. Previous media and online judges include Grazia magazine Style Editor Paula Reed, Off the Rails presenter Brendan Courtney, fashion blogger Susie Lau and Godfrey Deeny, European Editor of www.fashiowireddaily.

After beating numerous entries from design and fashion students across Ireland, the 20 finalists will bring their creative ideas to life at the Nokia Young Fashion Design Award exhibition, which will take place on Wednesday, March 24th at the Circus Store in the Powerscourt Town House Centre. This year the format of the event is changing to an exhibition, which will be open daily to the public from Thursday, 25th March to Sunday, 28th March. More information on the exhibition will be announced via the Nokia Young Fashion Designer Award Facebook, Twitter and Bebo pages over the next few weeks.

This year, students used Ovi – Nokia’s Services Portal and its many services, as the inspiration for their designs. Ovi, which means door in Finnish, opens up a new digital experience to users by enabling them to organise and connect their life in a simple and fun way on their Nokia handset or PC. By activating a free account on, users can back up and sync contacts, share and manage pictures, videos and files, access email accounts and download the latest tunes from the Nokia Music.
